The clutch pedal is the control mechanism which deactivates or activates the clutch component. A clutch is what allows the wheels and engine to be connected. If you step on the clutch pedal, the wheels and engine become disconnected from each other. The clutch release bearing helps make this disconnection possible.

 

Now you may wonder why you’d ever want to release the engine from the wheels. Think about when you slow down to a complete stop at a stop light or stop line. Even though your wheels are not moving, your engine is still running. If you don’t disconnect the running engine from the wheels as you slow down to a stop, then your engine will shut off. That way, your engine can continue spinning while your wheels stay motionless.

As you step on the brake pedal, the clutch release bearing moves toward the flywheel. The nearby pressure plate has release fingers which then get pushed into the strong spring, resulting in the wheels and engine becoming disconnected. If the clutch release bearing were to get worn out, damaged, or malfunction in some way, then it would disrupt the entire disconnection process. This will result in your car engine shutting off because of your inability to disengage the clutch.

pillow block bearing (or plummer block) is a pedestal used to provide support for a rotating shaft with the help of compatible bearings and various accessories. The assembly consists of a mounting block which houses a bearing.[1] The block is mounted to a foundation and a shaft is inserted allowing the inner part of the bearing / shaft to rotate.[1] The inside of the bearing is typically 0.001 inches (0.025 mm) larger than the shaft to ensure a tight fit.[2] Set screws, locking collars, or set collars are commonly used to secure the shaft.[2] Housing material for a pillow block is typically made of cast iron[1] or cast steel.

Typical Plummer BlockSelection[edit]

A pillow block usually refers to a housing with an included anti-friction bearing, wherein the mounted shaft is in a parallel plane to the mounting surface, and perpendicular to the center line of the mounting holes, as contrasted with various types of flange blocks or flange units. A pillow block may contain a bearing with one of several types of rolling elements, including ball, cylindrical roller, spherical roller, tapered roller, or metallic or synthetic bushing.[1] The type of rolling element defines the type of pillow block. These differ from "plummer blocks" which are bearing housings supplied without any bearings and are usually meant for higher load ratings and a separately installed bearing.[1] Plummer block bearings are designed for more corrosive environments.[1]

The fundamental application of both types is the same, which is to mount a bearing safely enabling its outer ring to be stationary while allowing rotation of the inner ring. The housing is bolted to a foundation through the holes in the base. Bearing housings may be either split type or solid type.[1] Split type housings are usually two-piece housings where the cap and base may be detached,[1] while solid are single-piece housings.[1] Various sealing arrangements may be provided to prevent dust and other contaminants from entering the housing. Thus the housing provides a clean environment for the environmentally sensitive bearing to rotate free from contaminants while also retaining lubrication, either oil or grease, hence increasing its performance and duty cycle.

Bearing housings are usually made of grey cast iron.[1] However, various grades of metals can be used to manufacture the same, including ductile iron, steel, stainless steel, and various types of thermoplastics and polyethylene-based plastics. The bearing element may be manufactured from 52100 chromium steel alloy (the most common), stainless steel, plastic, or bushing materials such as SAE660 cast bronze, or SAE841 oil impregnated sintered bronze, or synthetic materials.

  • Sleeve bearings are a kind of plain bearing--that is, bearings with few moving parts. Many spherical ball bearings have an internal ring, which is lined with smaller balls inside. In contrast to regular ball bearings, a sleeve bearing only has two moving parts; the outer sleeve and the inner rotating cylinder. They are also known as journal bearings, after the technical term for the outer sleeve. The outer journey of a sleeve bearing may be whole, split, or clenched between the two halves
  • Sleeve bearings can be made of compressed powdered metal, such as bronze or copper. Because of the material from which they are made, the metal is microscopically porous. When they are oiled on the outside, the oil will be drawn up through the pores to lubricate the inner cylinder. A sleeve bearing can be lubricated in a number of ways besides oiling. Sometimes, molten metal or graphite is used. Some man-made polymers can lubricate moving parts without seizing up in extremely cold temperatures. Other sleeve bearings are surfaced with porous, oiled hardwood so that the oil will be drawn up into them more readily

  • Though they are self-lubricating, sleeve bearings often fail through lack of lubrication. The inner bearing might wear away at the sleeve until the space is no longer perfectly cylindrical. This may cause the bearing to shake when it moves, adversely affecting the movement of the mechanism. Other times, there may not be enough lubricant, or the lubricant may become viscous through adverse temperature conditions. When there is not enough lubrication, the bearing will cease to move. Due to these issues, sleeve bearings are often elaborately shielded from dust and dirt by seals. A designer or mechanic needs to carefully consider where a sleeve bearing will be located in a machine before using it. They are criticized for being more finicky than ball bearings in that inadequate lubricant will cause them to come to a complete stop rather than wear down gradually over time
