Seals are used throughout the engine to keep oil where it's supposed to be and to protect the inner workings of the engine from dirt and debris, all of which are in plentiful supply on the roadOut-gassing: This is one of the common causes of oil seal failure, which happens due to the volatility of any of the constituents of the elastomer. These constituents may be the part of elastomer formulation, or gases may get trapped in the elastomer during the process of molding

Metal face seals are specifically engineered for demanding operating conditions, offering high reliability in harsh environments and at low circumferential speeds. They are robust seals that protect against both solid and liquid contaminants while retaining lubricants.

Rod and buffer seals maintain sealing contact in sliding motion between the cylinder head and the piston rod. Depending on the application, a rod sealing system can consist of a rod seal and a buffer seal or a rod seal only. Rod sealing systems for heavy duty typically consist of a combination of both seal types, whereas the buffer seal is arranged between the rod seal and the piston in the cylinder head. Rod seals determine the tolerance for the rod diameter d.

In addition to the sealing function, rod seals also provide a thin lubrication film on the piston rod that lubricates themselves and the wiper seals. The lubricant also inhibits corrosion of the piston rod surface. However, the lubrication film must be thin enough so that it returns to the cylinder during the return stroke.

Axial clamp seals are designed for large and very large shaft diameters. They are suitable for use as primary seals or as secondary seals in applications where the primary seals are subjected to excessive solid or fluid contaminants. Axial clamp seals do not rotate but seal axially against a rotating counterface. Axial clamp seals are made of profiled strips of non-reinforced nitrile rubber and are held firmly in position by stainless steel band clamps. They are available for shaft diameters ranging from 150 to 4 600 mm (5.9 to 181 in.

V-ring seals are axial shaft seals, available in a wide range of stock sizes and customized solutions for sizes above 2 000 mm or special requirements. 

Track pin seal design features a polyurethane sealing ring and a nitrile rubber energizer. The sealing ring retains the oil between the pin and the bushing and excludes contaminants. The energizer provides the static sealing ability. Ribs on the seal inside diameter enable oil to pass to provide the necessary lubrication.

There is also a heavy-duty version designed with a metal reinforcement ring moulded into the polyurethane sealing ring, providing additional rigidity for severe operating conditions.

Hydraulic cylinders operate in a variety of applications and environmental conditions, including exposure to dust, debris or outside weather conditions. To prevent these contaminants from entering the cylinder assembly and hydraulic system, wiper seals (also known as scrapers, excluders or dust seals) are fitted on the external side of the cylinder head.
