A ball bearing is a type of rolling-element bearing that uses balls to maintain the separation between the bearing races. The purpose of a ball bearing is to reduce rotational friction and support radial and axial loads. It achieves this by using at least two races to contain the balls and transmit the loads through the balls. In most applications, one race is stationary and the other is attached to the rotating assembly. As one of the bearing races rotates it causes the balls to rotate as well. Because the balls are rolling they have a much lower coefficient of friction than if two flat surfaces were sliding against each other.

A thrust bearing is a particular type of rotary bearing. Like other bearings they permanently rotate between parts, but they are designed to support a predominantly axial load.^[1]

Thrust bearings come in several varieties.

• Thrust ball bearings, composed of bearing balls supported in a ring, can be used in low thrust applications where there is little axial load.
• Cylindrical thrust roller bearings consist of small cylindrical rollers arranged flat with their axes pointing to the axis of the bearing. They give very good carrying capacity and are cheap, but tend to wear due to the differences in radial speed and friction which is higher than with ball bearings.
• Tapered roller thrust bearings consist of small tapered rollers arranged so that their axes all converge at a point on the axis of the bearing. The length of the roller and the diameter of the wide and the narrow ends and the angle of rollers need to be carefully calculated to provide the correct taper so that each end of the roller rolls smoothly on the bearing face without skidding. These are the type most commonly used in automotive applications (to support the wheels of a motor car for example), where they are used in pairs to accommodate axial thrust in either direction, as well as radial loads. They can support greater thrust loads than the ball type due to the larger contact area, but are more expensive to manufacture.

• Spherical roller thrust bearings use asymmetrical rollers of spherical shape, rolling inside a house washer with a raceway with spherical inner shape. They can accommodate combined radial and axial loads and also accommodate misalignment of the shafts. They are often used together with radial spherical roller bearings. Spherical roller thrust bearings offer the highest load rating density of all thrust bearings.^[2]
• Fluid bearings, where the axial thrust is supported on a thin layer of pressurized liquid—these give low drag.

• Magnetic bearings, where the axial thrust is supported on a magnetic field. This is used where very high speeds or very low drag is needed, for example the Zippe-type centrifuge.

Thrust bearings are commonly used in automotive, marine, and aerospace applications. They are also used in the main and tail rotor blade grips of RC (radio controlled) helicopters.

Thrust bearings are used in cars because the forward gears in modern car gearboxes use helical gears which, while aiding in smoothness and noise reduction, cause axial forces that need to be dealt with.

Thrust bearings are also used with radio antenna masts to reduce the load on an antenna rotator.

Stainless steel deep groove ball bearings (fig. 1) are corrosion resistant when exposed to moisture and several other media. They are available capped (with seals or shields) or open. Open bearings that are also available capped may have recesses in the ring side faces (fig. 2).

Miniature deep groove ball bearings with an extended inner ring are designed to offer enhanced performance in specific applications. These bearings feature an inner ring that is wider than the outer ring, typically by 0.397mm (1/64 inch) on both sides, providing increased stability and load capacity. They are part of the deep groove ball bearing family, which are self-retaining units and are among the most versatile and robust rolling bearings available. These bearings are commonly used in a wide range of light-duty instrument and precision applications, such as handheld tools and instruments.

Dynamometer bearings are a type of bearing specifically designed for use in dynamometers, devices used to measure the force, torque, or power output of engines or other mechanical devices. They are crucial for the accurate and reliable operation of the dynamometer, ensuring smooth and precise measurements.

Miniature extra-thin-section deep groove ball bearings are designed for applications where space is limited and high precision is required. These bearings have a smaller ratio of outer diameter to inner diameter compared to standard deep groove ball bearings. They are suitable for various needs, including miniature ball bearings and sub-assembly unit products.

Felt seal replacement bearings are designed with at least one felt seal, which helps in retaining lubrication and preventing contamination. Felt seals are made from compressed felt material, typically composed of natural or synthetic fibers, and can be impregnated with lubricants to enhance their sealing ability.

Angular contact ball bearings have inner and outer ring raceways that are displaced relative to each other in the direction of the bearing axis. This means that these bearings are designed to accommodate combined loads, i.e. simultaneously acting radial and axial loads.

The axial load carrying capacity of angular contact ball bearings increases as the contact angle increases. The contact angle is defined as the angle between the line joining the points of contact of the ball and the raceways in the radial plane, along which the combined load is transmitted from one raceway to another, and a line perpendicular to the bearing axis.

Insuohm bearings are a type of electrically insulated bearing designed to prevent electrical current from passing through the bearing and causing damage, particularly in applications where electrical current might flow through the bearing shaft. This insulation is achieved through a plasma-spray coating on the outer ring of the bearing, typically made of aluminum oxide.

Conductive bearings are designed to allow electrical current to pass through them without causing damage. Sensor bearings are mechatronic components that integrate a bearing with a sensor, providing a compact solution that reduces weight, space requirements, and assembly costs. These bearings convert signals from the bearing into electronic data, allowing for the measurement of parameters such as speed, acceleration, and direction. They are used in various applications, including automotive and industrial machinery, where accurate measurement of these parameters is critical.

Four-point contact ball bearings are radial single row angular contact ball bearings with raceways that are designed to support axial loads in both directions. For a given axial load, a limited radial load can also be supported. The bearings are separable, i.e. the outer ring with ball and cage assembly can be mounted separately from the two inner ring halves.

Double row deep groove ball bearings are very suitable for bearing arrangements where the load carrying capacity of a single row bearing is inadequate. For the same bore and outside diameter, double row bearings are slightly wider than single row bearings in the 62 and 63 series, but have a considerably higher load carrying capacity.

Double row deep groove ball bearings are only available as open bearings (without seals or shields).

Wide inner ring bearings, also known as extended inner ring ball bearings, are designed for special applications where the width of the inner ring is higher than the width of the outer ring. These bearings provide additional shaft support and can be locked to the shaft using set screws or an eccentric self-locking collar. They are available in cylindrical, spherical, and relubricated versions. The inner ring can be extended without a flange or with a flange, and they can be made from various materials such as chrome steel, stainless steel, or hybrid ceramic.
