Chrome steel is known for durability in dry environments or applications with low usage demands. It also has an appealing shiny finish when new. High-carbon chrome steel is a popular material for ball bearings, offering high load capacity, low-noise operation, and a long operating life.
Carbon steel (or high carbon chrome steel) is the most commonly used material for bearings. It has slightly better low noise characteristics than stainless steel. In addition, its hardness means it has better load capacity than stainless steel bearings.
Bearings made of chrome steel will rust easily which is why they leave the factory with the outer surfaces coated with a protective oil. Stainless steel bearings are much more corrosion resistant but will still rust when coming into contact with certain substances.
Chrome steel is one of a class of non stainless steels such as AISI 52100, En31, SUJ2, 100Cr6, 100C6, DIN 5401 which are used for applications such as bearings, tools, drills and utensils
